There is a new UK-based game site who offers a free full download of the game Rome: Total War. The website is called AWOMO and it is going to be an online game rental and subscription service. Currently is in beta and I think it's offering the free game to attract attention.

About half an hour ago I read on the Guardian that Joost has added 12.000 indie videos and that was enough motivation to go and see.
It has changed a lot and it looks ago, can spend some time there, can even login through Facebook.
The only problem is that I cannot find the way to embed videos here.

As I'm very curious I went to see and found these very cute little monkeys called Dusky Leaf Monkeys. I went and searched for them, found this website and apparently their status is nearly threatened: they are declining in number rapidly and are a cause for concern.

Conservation: Spectacled langurs are listed as Lower Risk/Least Concern by the IUCN. Langurs are threatened by deforestation and the trade in wild meat. The population of spectacled langurs was estimated to have declined from 305,000 to 155,000 from 1958 to 1975, and habitat loss due to human population growth has sharply intensified in the last decades.

Organisations such as the Dusky Langur Conservation and Community Centre are working to protect this species through ecotourism and voluntourism programmes (tourists who volunteer their services) focused on langur observation, rehabilitation and education. To be honest I don't need proof to be concerned, the moment that we have the definitive proof that we cause climate change it will be too late to do anything about it. Some things are too important not to err on the side of caution.

  Comments

I am trying Strands

It is still in beta but got an invite within a few hours, I've just set up my profile and so far so good, although I don't see the point yet as it is similar to Friendfeed without some of the features I like, such as rooms and the real time view. It has a list on the side where you can choose whether to look at photos, videos, blogs etc which is quite nice as some of the features (last.fm for instance lists everything you listen to, the small album cover is cute but it can create a lot of noise). It does not have that many services you can add yet but I keep it going for the time being, we will see.

  Comments

I want to connect all my social media accounts together

Yes, I think that for someone like me who has dozens of accounts everywhere there is the need to connect everything together.
So far I have managed to integrate my updates successfully only with FriendFeed but it does not give me a way to have a single login to all these accounts and the cross-site integration is only one way. I like the new option of being able to send updates from FriendFeed directly to Twitter although I have disabled most of my accounts as I don't want to create too much noise everywhere. Ideally I would like the option of having the output of each room I create to go to the service or services I choose. For instance I might want anything related to music from "my music room" to go to Pownce or anything internet related to be published on Twitter. Or whatever. But as far as I know that is not possible yet.

I've tried Ping.fm, it lets you update your status in a variety of sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Identi.ca etc with a single message but let's be honest do I really need to tell the whole internet what I'm doing? I promise I will only use it when I have something extraordinary to tell which is very unlikely to happen. And ideally I want to use different sites for different subjects without creating duplicates. I have also tried Lifestream.fm which is FriendFeed with less options.

There is a new service that apparently launched yesterday called Power.com
(I cannot believe that a domain name like that was not already taken) that says provides a login for all social media although I can only see the 5 social networking sites and I don't have an account with four of them and YouTube appears to be in Portuguese. And Facebook wants to do the same thing anyway.
I am checking out this Tarpipe which I do not think it's what I need. I'm still waiting.

The second explanation has to do with black and white television and film. It's possible that the boom in black and white film and television during the first half of the last century either affected the form of people's dreams at that time, or affected their beliefs about the form dreams generally take.

Funnily enough when I try to imagine anything prior to the 1960s I automatically see it in black and white. For instance, my mind finds it difficult to accept that daily life in the 1950s or 1940s was in colour.
A bit like this really.

Wikipedia says:

At its height, Calico boasted a population of 1,200 people, and over 500 silver mines. Now however, the town is populated by no more than 12 people, while the mines are inactive. Besides the usual assortment of bars, brothels, gambling halls and a few churches, Calico also supported a newspaper, the Calico Print. During the mid 1890s the price of silver dropped and Calico's silver mines were no longer economically viable. With the end of borax mining in the region in 1907 the town became completely abandoned. The last original inhabitant of Calico before it was abandoned, Mrs. Lucy Bell Lane, died in the 1960s. Her house remains as the main museum in town.

Secondly, in the same area of books for children that adults might love there is website called Lookybook that allows anyone to explore children books by virtually turning pages. Anyone can do it but registered users can save the favourite books. Anyway, the good thing is that is free and there is quite a lot to look at. Handy to entertain children (that's my excuse).
My favourite has to be the Canadian Wallace Edwards.

The music is good quality and there are some well known names. If you are in London you can even subscribe to the mailing list and they let you know when and where the next busking event takes place. Otherwise you can just watch the videos.

I would not have thought I had any interest in them but now that I look at them in this format they are not bad at all.

Addictionary is a strange dictionary that looks at weird words and users are encouraged to make up words for situations and things that don't have one. For instance, we have one of my pet hates:

A person who instantly pauses at the end of a running escalator, because arriving on a different floor is a huge mental challenge.

Someone suggested the word "escatard".

Forvo can be quite useful, not so much for learning another language from scratch, there are better ways to do that, but it's fascinating to find out how to pronounce foreign people and places names the way the natives do. This is how a Russian pronounces Moscow and how a Dane says this lovely word tilsyneladende.
Unfortunately I don't even know what it means.

Yes, I'm still one of those people that have not switched to Google Chrome, simply because I cannot live without my Firefox plugins.

POSTCARDS usually aim to feature a location's most picturesque sights but an Islington postcard featuring abandoned binbags and a shop called "Get Stuffed" is flying off the shelves.

I searched on Google for these two characters who apparently travel around Britain in a caravan and found their website that has samples of their now famous postcards.

But look at it, would you hug this? This is the ultimate proof that pandas are not cute teddy bears.

Anyway this is more on pandas evolution and why they look like cartoon characters. Here we have a little panda that becomes a big panda. And this is necessary if you are really really into pandas.

Tyger from ladobleatv on Vimeo.

Provided I can embed the video this time, this hi-tech business is getting on top of me. Anyway this animation is based on a poem by William Blake created by Guilherme Marcondes and on his website you can find more stuff

  Comments

Oops fear of failure and other fears

We need a motivational article for today, this is about overcoming fears.
I've come to the conclusion that the more arrogant someone appears to be the more fears they have.

  Comments

How I surf the internet these days

I remember those days when I used to check the same websites everyday and occasionally do some searches on Google. Most of the times it was a disappointing experience as I knew there was good stuff out there but I could not find it.
Increasingly for the past couple of years I've been using the so called social media to find interesting stuff.

Delicious was my first one about 3 years ago although now I use Diigo because it has some interesting features such as groups and lists. But it does not matter because whatever I bookmark with Diigo is synchronized in Delicious. I even used Ma.gnolia a bit but I never got keen on it.

Then came Stumbleupon but I don't use it very often these days, who's got the time to stumble?

Then there was Digg followed by Reddit recently I have started using Mixx and Regator. With these site I always find something to read, guaranteed.

I've never been into social networking sites, never had a MySpace account and only opened a Facebook account a few weeks ago and I'm still no sure whether it has a point (at least for me) although some of the groups are interesting but I've not had the chance to discover everything yet. I quite like Last.fm, never used it as a networking site but more like a way to find a source of music whenever I want to listen to some but cannot be bother to choose.

I've used FriendFeed for at least 6 months, I use it as a hub for all my activities and I like the private rooms features. Initially I was not very keen on Twitter, but since I have been able to synchronize FriendFeed with Twitter, I've used the latter a lot more. I think that part of the problem was that I didn't have anyone interesting to follow and now that I do, I really enjoy TweetDesk and Twittervision (when I'm really bored).

I also have a sort of blog on Tumblr which is not a proper blog but a way for me to keep all images (and some videos) that I find and like. Another blogging platform I like is Posterous but I don't have a blog there (yet) and then of course I can spend (waste?) some time on Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo, Deviant Art and of course Wikipedia.

  Comments

Pink Floyd thing

This is not new but I've only found it this morning and it is quite stunning. It is a presentation for the Pink Floyd box set and it is an impressive example of web design even if someone is not into Pink Floyd's music. Worth seeing.

I've not yet managed to live somewhere with a fireplace, the best I could have was one of those tacky ones with plastic flames.
