  • Hypoallergenic cats

Now even people who are allergic to cats can have their own kitten.

The cats are not transgenic animals—their genes have not been altered to make them less of an allergy risk.

Instead Allerca officials say they searched for natural variations in the cat gene that controls allergy-inducing properties and then bred cats with the desired trait.

The cat in the picture above is not hypoallergenic.

  • abuse and complaints

Anyone who abuses NHS staff could be fined £1,000 and thrown off the premises, the government has proposed.

More than 60,000 NHS staff were physically assaulted by patients and relatives of patients in 2005 - an assault for every 22 NHS staff.

NHS staff have welcomed the idea of fines. Among them is Kate Hollis, a nurse who was punched in the face by a patient.

She told BBC Radio Five Live: "People don't always fit into those typical stereotypes of a young lad on a Saturday night that's drunk that comes into the department. It can be Mr Average that becomes verbally abusive.

"I think the actual fines if they do come into practice will be quite a good deterrent and obviously the general public are finding out the facts and figures now of how many people are verbally abused and assaulted. NHS staff have always known about this but now obviously it's coming to light."

    Full BBC article

I'm sure that there are people that are abusive with no reasons, but I've witnessed a couple of scenes in a hospital when I could only sympatise with the "abuser".
In one case a little woman started to shout abuse after she had to go back for the third time in 24 hours to A&E with a sick baby. Every time the baby had been quickly seen and dismissed by a junior doctor. She claimed he was getting worse when she arrived for the third time and was told that the waiting time was several hours (and the bloke at reception was brutally rude to everyone) she lost it. She was not violent (she was too small to afford to do that) but the police was called and two police cars and a van arrived within five minutes. So you had this surreal scene of screaming little woman holding screaming baby surrounded by seven coppers and two security guards.
I don't condone violence or verbal abuse but I find that when you are in an A&E department you are often in a time of severe stress and you have to wait for a long time and althought most staff are probably very good I've encountered some that were not exactly kind and considerate.
(Obviously, as usual, if some NHS staff gets hurt or punched odds are that are the ones that did not deserve it.)

    doctor

To make it fairer I think that something like this should be accompanied by a better and more independent NHS complaint procedure.
I filled a quite serious complaint against my own GP, with strong evidence, all I got out of it was the chance to talk to a few very patronising people and a letter that nearly apologises but doesn't really. At the end you feel that nobody has looked at it with an open and independent mind and the wish to improve things but only trying to make me go away (it took over a year). On top of that you know that they close ranks, it's you against the system. My ex GP, who I can prove was not doing his job properly, is still practising and did not have to face any disciplinary procedure or fines of any kind.
